Strike: Stop Blackmail, Go Back to Class, NGOTells ASUUARTICLE | NOVEMBER 1, 2013 - 6:57AM |

A nongovernmental organisation Centre for
Good Governance, Peace and Media Advocacy
said on Thursday that it condemn every
attempt by ASUU and its leadership to
continue to throw weighty punches on well
meaning Nigerians who try to offer their
services to helping to resolve the ongoing
crisis in the sector.
This was contained in a press statement
signed by its Executive Director, Comrade
Philip Agbese in Abuja. The statement reads in
part: “We have thus keenly observed
developments in this very critical sector. The
effort of the Federal Government in
establishing additional Universities and
increasing funding for the educational sector
is indeed commendable. The sincerity of the
Federal Government in tackling the peculiar
challenges of this very dire sector cannot be
overemphasized. However the knotty recurrent
monstrous sagas of incessant ASUU strikes
have continually exerted a negative toll on
whatever gains we have made in this vital
sector.
“Successive governments have made efforts to
tame this amorphous monster of persistent
ASUU strikes, but no attempt has been more
apt than the recent inauguration of the
Universities Needs Assessment and
Implementation Committee headed by the
Governor of Benue State, Dr. Gabriel Suswam.
No better testament to the sincerity of the
Federal Government to resolve this chutzpah
can be adduced than the appointment of this
seasoned advocate as the head of this very
sensitive committee”.
The statement also added: “That aside earned
wages and certain other personal
requirements, part of ASUU’s present demands
include the provision of standard
infrastructure on our campuses to cater for
the academic needs of staff and Students
alike. The salient fact remains that if any
problems in our citadels of learning must be
meted an enduring solution, then the
fundamental root cause must be assessed and
dealt with appropriately. It is this dicey and
onerous task the Needs Assessment and
Implementation Committee is saddled with.”
“The public break down of financial issues
surrounding the NEEDS Committee by
Governor Gabriel Suswam is commendable and
should be applauded by all as we expect ASUU
to call off the strike to enable our brothers
return back to school soon’, the statement
